EPA: Water Contamination Worsens on Airplanes
As reported in the San Jose Mercury News, The EPA has reported that the contamination of the water aboard the nation's airplanes is much worse then previously had been reported.
In a second round of testing in the bathrooms and kitchens of 169 passenger airplanes, conducted in November and December 2004, the EPA found coliform in nearly one in five of the aircraft. Coliform is the key indicator for fecal contamination and germs that cause disease.
The contamination rate discovered, 17.2 percent,is higher than the 12.7 percent discovered in the tests three months ago, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
Of course, the airline industry is disputing these findings.
I would suggest we all drink water from a bottle the next time we fly. I know I will.

My name is Wendy Nichols and I am currently enrolled at Marygrove College in Detroit. I am taking a class this summer entitled Advanced Oral and Written Communications. My instructor had us to select an environmental issue and I chose water. My topic was bottled water versus tap water. My stance was for tap water because I believe that bottled water is all about money.
Bottled water is sold to consumers having them to believe that it is purer, safer, and tastier than tap water. After months of research, I have found that bottled water is more dangerous than tap water. The rules and regulations for bottled water which are mandated by the FDA are less stringent than the rules for tap water that are mandated by the EPA. Bottled water companies are not required to test the water that they are selling to consumers, and this leaves room for disease as well as deadly pollutants. In conclusion, bottled water is actually just tap water placed in plastic containers with fancy labels on the front.
Which do you think America should drink, bottled water or tap water? Thirsty citizens are anxious to know.

In response to your comments, my experience has taught me that there is no
bad tap water, only some need water filtration of some sort. All tap water can be made potable. Meanwhile, yes, virtually all the brands of bottled water start out as tap. The most insulting thing to a consumer is those that label their water "spring water", and then it is shown to come directly from a well under a previous industrial site. The rhetorical question most
consumers should realize, is that considering what we have done to our
environment, just how many "spring water" situations exist in this country?
The answer would be even worse for Europe.
Also Wendy, please supply your email address in the future, so that I may reply to you directly.
Thank you.
