20 percent of wells test contaminanted in Dakota County, MN

DAKOTA.jpgOne out of five drinking water wells tested in rural Dakota County, MN contains unsafe levels of agricultural chemicals, according to results presented yesterday to county commissioners.

Dakota County Commissioner Joe Harris said that enough wells contained chemicals that it's necessary to inform all 8,000 households with private wells that their water may be risky to drink.

He said that the county should not receive a "black eye" because of its water troubles and that many southeastern Minnesota areas with sandy soil and fractured limestone also probably have chemicals in their ground water. "We're not the only one with a problem, but we're the only one testing for it," Harris said,as reported by the Star Tribune.
