APPCED Ends Calling for Water Conservation
The Asia-Pacific Parliamentarians Conference on Environment and Development (APPCED) held in Islamambad, Pakistan, ended on Friday, with the representatives of 20 countries agreeing to promote more opportunities for development, conservation and sustainability of water resources.
Pakistan Senate Chairman Muhammad Mian Soomro said "Water availability in Pakistan is persistently decreasing, both in terms of total amount of water as well as per capita water availability. Moreover, severe levels of water pollution and unchecked industrial pollutants have added an element of urgency to water management issues."
APPCED Vice President Senator Amjad Abbas said the solution to international environmental and water issues lay in cooperation, and urged international cooperation to solve the problem. "We need to experiment with more innovative ideas. We must pool our thoughts to determine the technologies, ideas and practices we can share for the collective good of our peoples."
APPCED President and Korean MP Won Hye Young expressed confidence in the declaration adopted by the APPCED general assembly as a solid foundation for achieving APPCED's objectives.
He also appreciated Pakistan's hospitality to the delegates during their stay in the country, as reported by the Daily Times.
