Annual Chlorine Spike Casuses Stir In Washington dc

logo_wasa.gifThe Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit environmental research organization based in DC, found, when testing for chlorine toxins in tap water throughout the District, 40 percent of the water samples had concentrations of chlorine contaminants far higher than federal safety limit,in April and May.

At a news conference today, leaders of the Washington Aqueduct and the D.C. Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) said high levels of chlorine toxins found in the water this spring are likely temporary and should not put the system's 1.1 million consumers in any danger.

Washington Aqueduct general manager, Thomas Jacobus, said the treatment facility is currently reviewing improvements to its treatment process that would greatly reduce the chlorination toxins that are formed when chlorine reacts with organic materials that are in the Potomac River. WASA officials said they are reviewing whether to continue the annual chlorine flush of the system that caused the high levels, as reported by The Washington Post.
