Water Utility Sues Santa Claus

xholidayworld.jpgOh say it isn't so! What will the children think?
Santa La Hill, a rural water utility, has sued the southern Indiana town of Santa Claus and the company that owns the Holiday World amusement park.

According to the utility, under an arrangement guaranteed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it buys its water from the Town of Santa Claus and sells it to Holiday World. As explained in the lawsuit filed in federal court, the protections are aimed at keeping utilities such as Santa La Hill from competition in order to encourage rural water development.

The company that owns Holiday World and Splashin' Safari, Koch Development, recently sent the utility a letter saying it will no longer buy water from the company, instead buying directly from the town.

"We're afraid in the event of a water shortage that the town would be forced to begin water restrictions with its customers," Koch Development President Will Koch said. "That would, in effect, leave us without an ample water supply. We would be closed," as reported by The Herald, and published by the Associated Press.
